To regain full movement or what could be called “normal” movement and return to everyday activities at work, home and sporting activities can be a long painful experience.

At PASC we have developed techniques that can accelerate recovery and re-habitation of muscles and joints proven to work over the past 20 years, firstly in our pain clinic in Perth and now we have the Pain Anxiety Stress Clinic in Riccarton, Christchurch.

Problems You May Encounter with Pain Rehab.

After an injury or operation there is a time that needs to be spent regaining movement in your body.

It's very important that you are responsible for your recovery and learn self-help techniques that you can use at home.

Below are some of the things that can get in the way of a complete recovery and return to the life

  • Treatment during appointments may be too painful

  • Remedial exercises you are given may also be too painful.

  • Exercises may be complicated and you are unsure of if you're doing them correctly.

  • Your physiotherapist or other therapist may not listen to you or may not ask your point of view.

  • You don't seem to be making progress with little or no change.

  • You fear that you are getting stiffer or the pain from your injury or operation is getting worse.

  • Treatment can be confusing or not fully explained.

  • You feel or think your not getting the right information.

  • Treatment continues for months or even years with little change.

Treatment and recovery doesn't have to be too painful. Although you are trying to re-energise muscles that haven't been used for some time and become atrophied, gentle repetition can be the key to making progress.

What Should You Get from Physical Rehab Recovery?

  • Thoughtful and understanding aftercare to recover from your injury or operation.

  • Graduated movement pain rehab negotiated between you and your physiotherapist.

  • Holistic body treatment-as although you may have a painful

  • knee, movement and exercise for other joints may be needed.

  • Learn ways to release muscle tension with self-care.

Aftercare following an operation or injury needs to have a plan for the end of pain rehab; and to ensure movements return to normal - normal before the injury or operation that you underwent.

Our clinic rehab is designed individually for you and at your pace not a pre-designed set of exercises that may work for one person, but perhaps not for another?

Important Ideas for Work and Pain Rehabilitation

  • Inclusion of the contralateral nature of movement and stability. Reduce the fear of doing normal everyday activities.

  • Create goals and aspirations for your life in the future - look beyond the pain you have at the present moment.

  • Have regular reviews and assessments to measure your progress.

  • If sufficient progress is not happening it's important to consider incorporating other health professionals into your treatment, or to refer you to another practitioner.

We work to rebalance the muscles of your body so they send correct messages to, and from the brain to alter the integrity of the body, hence correcting the push and pull of individual muscles.

Individual muscles need to switch on and off, move in a fluid way and team up with other muscles when needed. Really working together as a cohesive team, without friction and disagreement!

Treatment may also involve the mental and emotional impact of the injury. This process is often neglected by many medical treatments but can speed up or help complete recovery.

For instance,

Consider a whiplash injury  for a car accident. Months after the tissue damage has healed, pain may persist as the accident itself is surrounded by a range of reactions and emotions.

Posture and Movement Analysis - how you move may cause pain

As an optional appointment we can examine your movement, recording the way you walk and photograph front, side and back views.

This gives not only us, but you the chance to see how your operation, injury, stroke or trauma has affected your movement.
